Voortborduren: Rewild The Forest | Graduation Collection

A woman came to a body of water, deep within the forest. She came here to drink. A forest animal came near her, as to say: “Please, give me some of this water, too.” But the woman was startled by the animal and felt scared. How did she know this wild animal would not harm her? The animal felt the fear and got scared, too. He quickly ran away, to find another source of water.

We do not know what Mother Nature wants to give to the people. Because if we had known this, we would openly listen the wisdoms of the forest and all life within it. And we would have lived a completely different life.

There is a lot of fear surrounding letting go. Letting go of our habits, our control. We have slowly progressed to be the dominant species of this Earth, in control of almost everything. We try to honor Mother Nature, but we do not know Her. We do not know what She really needs and are too busy with holding onto our own control to really listen. The animals in these wild woods honor Her and know Her. They are one.

Believe me, there will come a new age. In this age, that has started already, true souls will be able to really get to know Her in a new way, listen to Her teachings and honor Her in the way She wants to be honored.

Nature needs saving. More and more coral reefs die because of global warming and rainforests are cut down to provide us with more land for agriculture. This results in great loss of biodiversity that required thousands of years to develop. And we, all caught up in our fast city lives, are only thinking about what to do, buy and wear next. I’m here to make you see what we are still doing to the world and how fun it can be to play your part. Loving Mother Nature as a divine being, listening to Her and respecting Her. We can get a lot back in return.

Merklappen were used as sample pieces on which young girls learned to mark their clothes and linnen by practicing embroidered alphabets. Symbols were used to visualize a story, mostly showing important life events or stories from the Bible. Sample pieces like these were found all over the world as early as 200 BC. In the Netherlands, girls learned these techniques during the crafting lessons Nuttige Handwerken voor Meisjes. These old crafts have been a big inspiration during this project. It is fascinating how quickly we lost touch with the way clothes are made. We used to care so much more about our clothes when we made, repaired and decorated them by hand. We should invest the same love and attention as we used to into our clothing. Repairing and decorating our clothes with our own story could be a great way to start.

Designing this collection has been done completely digitally, using Clo3D. The patterns were fitted digitally and print and textile placement were tested this way. Because of this, no physical samples were needed during the creation of this collection.
