Voortborduren: Renewable City | Graduation Collection

When we envisioned the Renewable City, we were in awe. The city was powered by only renewable energy sources, like wind, solar, thermal and hydropower. The people of this city lived in full harmony with nature, growing their food and giving back by caring for the land and biodiversity. They saw all their possessions as very valuable and cared for them. All of the resources created in this city were CO2 neutral and recyclable.

The people who envisioned the city returned home, explaining to others what they saw. They told them of the amazing ways of this Renewable City, but the other people were sceptical. Thinking that we could never achieve a city like that, as that would take way much effort and money, while there are much easier solutions available. But I don’t understand how people could favour their money and time over the wellbeing of the world. Why is it not their dream to live in harmony with Mother Nature and all the other beings that inhabit the earth?

The cheaper options might seem easier, but all these unsustainable resources are limited. We cannot use oil, coal and metals this easily forever, not only because the CO2 emissions are going to result in a climate disaster, but also because we will run out. This actually forces us to spend money and time to think about new ways to continue this lifestyle.

Nature needs saving. More and more coral reefs die because of global warming and rainforests are cut down to provide us with more land for agriculture. This results in great loss of biodiversity that required thousands of years to develop. And we, all caught up in our fast city lives, are only thinking about what to do, buy and wear next. I’m here to make you see what we are still doing to the world and how fun it can be to play your part. Loving Mother Nature as a divine being, listening to Her and respecting Her. We can get a lot back in return.

Merklappen were used as sample pieces on which young girls learned to mark their clothes and linnen by practicing embroidered alphabets. Symbols were used to visualize a story, mostly showing important life events or stories from the Bible. Sample pieces like these were found all over the world as early as 200 BC. In the Netherlands, girls learned these techniques during the crafting lessons Nuttige Handwerken voor Meisjes. These old crafts have been a big inspiration during this project. It is fascinating how quickly we lost touch with the way clothes are made. We used to care so much more about our clothes when we made, repaired and decorated them by hand. We should invest the same love and attention as we used to into our clothing. Repairing and decorating our clothes with our own story could be a great way to start.

Designing this collection has been done completely digitally, using Clo3D. The patterns were fitted digitally and print and textile placement were tested this way. Because of this, no physical samples were needed during the creation of this collection.
