Voortborduren: Recolour Coral | Graduation Collection

All over the world, there are incredibly complex and beautiful coral reefs, containing a diverse variety of organisms. We, as people, have the responsibility to care for the reef, seeing the great influence we have to let ecosystems like these thrive or die. Mother Nature has shown us how we may see and touch everything on earth, but with respect.

But we looked at the beautiful coral. We also looked at the rest of the world and saw that we could do everything we wanted; we could eat, drive, build and consume. We kept wanting more and more, but did not see that the overfishing, polluting and CO2 emissions were slowly warming up the sea. We see now that if that happens, all coral, sponges, algae, fish and other life in the reef will die.

Mother Nature sees that the colorful reef has turned into a white skeleton version of itself, while we were the ones with the responsibility to care for the reef. I can hear Her call out to us: ‘Where are you?’ But we are just too busy, building beautiful things of our own. We were distracted and did not notice the sea warming up. Now is our chance to turn this around, to treat these amazing ecosystems with the delicacy and respect it deserves.

Because if we let this continue, more and more ecosystems will lose balance. As all life relies on each other, all sea life will slowly die over time. We will not be able to eat fish anymore, resulting in people starving. Toxins will not be filtered from the water and large scale algal blooms cannot be prevented anymore.

Nature needs saving. More and more coral reefs die because of global warming and rainforests are cut down to provide us with more land for agriculture. This results in great loss of biodiversity that required thousands of years to develop. And we, all caught up in our fast city lives, are only thinking about what to do, buy and wear next. I’m here to make you see what we are still doing to the world and how fun it can be to play your part. Loving Mother Nature as a divine being, listening to Her and respecting Her. We can get a lot back in return.

Merklappen were used as sample pieces on which young girls learned to mark their clothes and linnen by practicing embroidered alphabets. Symbols were used to visualize a story, mostly showing important life events or stories from the Bible. Sample pieces like these were found all over the world as early as 200 BC. In the Netherlands, girls learned these techniques during the crafting lessons Nuttige Handwerken voor Meisjes. These old crafts have been a big inspiration during this project. It is fascinating how quickly we lost touch with the way clothes are made. We used to care so much more about our clothes when we made, repaired and decorated them by hand. We should invest the same love and attention as we used to into our clothing. Repairing and decorating our clothes with our own story could be a great way to start.

Designing this collection has been done completely digitally, using Clo3D. The patterns were fitted digitally and print and textile placement were tested this way. Because of this, no physical samples were needed during the creation of this collection.
