When I search for peace, I imagine myself floating deep beneath the ocean’s surface. Seashells have become a symbol of that feeling: protective forms that offer both refuge and a place from which to observe.
Yet shells are also evidence of connection. Carried across oceans by currents, migration, and human activity, they travel far beyond their place of origin. Shells found on Dutch shores can come from distant parts of the world, revealing networks of movement.
This project explores the tension between solitude and community. It considers how we seek local, meaningful connection in a world increasingly shaped by globalisation, algorithms, and artificial intelligence. Like shells carried by unseen currents, we are individuals shaped by forces beyond our immediate view while remaining connected to one another in unexpected ways. The work navigates how we can feel both isolated and deeply connected at the same time.
Returning to textiles after a period of distance has become an opportunity to reconsider my work with a new perspective. This project is an ongoing exploration, where past ideas become the foundation for new directions by revisiting and reinterpreting earlier works.
At this stage, the process is centred around research, experimentation and material development, allowing the concept and narrative to evolve naturally alongside the making process. Through creating samples and textiles, I am allowing the story to emerge gradually and in an intuitive way.
